Kinsale – A Gem In Southern Ireland

When I talk about my childhood it is impossible not to talk about Kinsale. Kinsale is a beautiful seaside town in the south or Ireland. It is very famous with American travellers to Ireland and well known throughout the emerald isle for a great destination.

I was fortunate enough to spend every summer of my childhood here and some winter months too. Cork city, where my parents grew up, is located just up the road about a 30 minute drive away so they chose Kinsale as the place to buy a summer home for the family.

Looking back I feel so lucky to have spent so much time as a kid in Kinsale because it’s a magical place. As an adult I appreciate it even more and spend at least 6 weeks in the house every year, I’d be crazy not to stay there with the sea on my doorstep.

The Boats

As you first drive into Kinsale you will see the large marina full of yachts and speed boats. When you visit this beautiful town you have to hop on a boat and explore the seas or head up river. I loved it as a kid because we had a speed boat, so we’d spend everyday water skiing, fishing or hanging on for dear life on the banana boat. You don’t need to own a boat because you can always rent a small one or hop onboard the harbour tour which runs during the peak season.

The Food

If you love seafood then Kinsale is the place for you and has some of the best restaurants in the country. Fishy Fishy, a local favourite and always busy because the seafood is freshly caught and of the highest standard. If you’re looking for something a bit different then The Black Pig is awesome, serving up tasty tapas dishes with the best wine selection in town. You have to book ahead for both because they’re are regularly fully booked.

Trad Music

Trad as the locals call it basically means traditional Irish music and you will find it being played in 4-5 pubs every night. The Blue Haven is good if you want to chill out in a lounge sort of setting but if you want something a bit more rough and ready then take a stroll. The American tourists love the trad music and often join in because they know several songs and can play the traditional music.

Kinsale is a special place in a very special country, if you’re heading to Ireland don’t miss it!
